Chateau Gantonnet is one of the Richard family's chateaux, an estate of Richard Vins. It was founded in the mid-1800s and was folded into Richard Vins in the 1950s. Since then, they've upgraded to a vineyard that's both biodynamic and organic. The chateau is located in Entre-Deux-Mers and is principally planted to Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Our selection is a beauty, composed of the classic blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc.

The estate has nearly 200 acres of vineyards, making it quite substantial. Its mix of grape planting is 80% red and 20% white. What sets Chateau Gantonnet apart from most is their plant density. They plant nearly 2,000 vines per acre, versus half that number in a typical California vineyard. Obviously, this is much more expensive to manage, but the rewards are that each vine must account for a smaller portion of the total. In so doing, each vine produces heartier, more flavorful grapes and that translates into the wine. Everything must be done by hand, as no machine would fit anywhere in the vineyard.

Vintages are very important in Bordeaux, and they can vary greatly. For instance, 2015 was a great vintage, so it got a ton of attention. 2014 got lost in 2015's shadow - even though the vintage was almost as good. As a result, the prices for 2014 are about half those of 2015, but that's not necessarily an indication of the quality of the wine.

Our selection from Chateau Gantonnet represents an outstanding value. From the deep, dense purple color to the extracted aromas of black cherry signaling the similar flavors on the palate, it pleases at every level.
