Chateau d'Arthus lies on the right bank of the Dordogne River near Saint-Emilion. It was built in the late 18th Century, but for more than 100 years has been owned by the Janoueix Family. It consists of just 23 acres made up of mostly Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Like so many other chateaux in Bordeaux, d'Arthus suffers from an identity crisis. The wine is labeled simply Bordeaux, but is located literally just a few feet from the Saint-Emilion appellation, one of Bordeaux's most famous appellations. In head-to-head competitions, d'Arthus not only is comparable to their famous neighbors, but has actually bested them in blind tastings. Best of all, d'Arthus is less than half the price. The geographic lines were drawn over 150 years ago and there doesn't seem to be much interest in changing them, but it would make sense to do so.

So, d'Arthus continues to amaze with their outstanding wines at impressive prices. This beauty is just beginning to show its pedigree. Though still young, it shows its promise in the nose with the integration of lilac and other floral aromas, as well as, dense black cherry fruit flavors on the palate and silky tannins. It all spells perfection with a rib eye smothered in caramelized onions and black peppercorns or a veal rib chop with black truffles.
