Cleyrac is one of the many international properties managed by Bronco Wine Company, one of the largest wine companies in the world. It was founded over a century ago and changed hands several times between wars until coming under the umbrella of Bronco. It could not have been better.
While Bordeaux has always been the most revered wine in the world, many chateaux have gone out of business or just expired because there was never enough business for all the producers, just the better-known ones. As a result, properties like Cleyrac barely survived. That began to change in the 1970s as more partnerships developed with foreign investments, which greatly improved quality and helped make names out of chateaux like Cleyrac. Today, with vineyards approaching 20 years of age, Cleyrac is producing the wines that they were always intended to create.
Add to that the incredible 2017 vintage and you have an unbeatable combination, as well as an incredible value. The beauty of the vintage is the superlative quality of the 2015 vintage. It may not make sense, but what happens here is, while 2017 was hailed as excellent, the 2015 received even more accolades. So, everybody forgot about 2017. That couldn't be better for us because the quality is comparable, but the price is much less. This impressive blend of 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon presents a plethora of engaging flavors from light cherry to cranberry and anise. The spicy edge could handle all comers from veal Cordon Bleu to chicken pot pie.
