Chateau Cap de Merle is owned by two brothers, Alaine and Jean-Marie Bel. The chateau has been in the family for more than 30 years. Alain is the winemaker and Jean-Marie tends the vines.

The chateau is on the Right Bank of the Gironde River in the Lussac commune of Saint-Emilion. The area is one of the most prized in Bordeaux, with many of the finest chateaux.

The Left and Right Banks of Bordeaux are differentiated by the predominance of Merlot, or the lack thereof. Here, Merlot is the main grape, with Cabernet Franc taking second place; whereas in the Left Bank, Cabernet Sauvignon takes a larger percentage of the blend, though Merlot and Cabernet Franc are also important.

This 2014 vintage is nothing short of spectacular. Everything could not have come out better. To take advantage of this perfect vintage, Alain lowered the temperature of the fermenting grapes to slow the process, extracting more color and flavor.

The result is an imposing wine of incredible depth and concentration. Vintages are so important here, and when you get a great one like 2014, the wine stands out above the rest.

Here is Bordeaux at its best. Regal and raucous but still restrained. The dense berry fruit is apparent in the aroma, which easily translates on to the palate with the same density and presence. An absolute hit with prime rib.
