We can't say no to these guys. Here's an incredible wine from one of our favorite wineries, Matchbook. The winery and estate vineyards are run by the husband and wife team of John and Lane Giguiere, and John's brother, Karl.
Matchbook got its name due to John's penchant for playing with matches as a young boy and getting himself into trouble more than a few times. He obviously has changed in that regard because the only things he sets on fire now are his prices.
This family has been growing grapes and making wine for over 30 years and in that time they haven't skipped a beat. Every wine they craft is worth more than they charge for it. This stellar selection is a perfect example.
Our selection is a blend of Petite Sirah and Syrah. It was once thought that these two grapes were related, which is how Petite Sirah got its name, but DNA testing has shown that they are definitely different.
Petite Sirah makes up 68% of the blend and the Syrah makes up the other 32% adding boldness and color. Even though these two grapes are not related, they seem to integrate perfectly together.
The result is an amazing amalgam of bold flavors and textures that won't let up. The Petite Sirah brings dark cherry, earth and pine and the Syrah adds earth and anise. The finish seems to last for minutes instead of seconds bringing every flavor to center stage.
