It's one thing to be the first, as nobody can take that away from you. It's another to be the best, though that can change. The best scenario is when you're both. That is the case with the Giguiere Family, owners of Black's Station.

They were the first ones to plant grapes in Yolo County's Dunnigan Hills nearly 40 years ago. Their two previous generations were also grape growers so they knew a thing or two about growing grapes.

They also knew what to do with them because, in less than 20 years, they became one of the most successful brands in the U.S. Some 20 years later the Giguiere family sold it to a mega conglomerate which kept it for a few years and folded it into one of their other holdings.

That left the Giguiere's a bit put out, so like any good Andy Hardy movie, they decided to start where they left off and founded Matchbook in the same area as their original winery. Unamazingly, they started churning out one wine hit after another and still make the best wines to be had in Yolo County.

The town of Zamora, just down the road from the winery, used to be called Black's Station in the late 1800s. J.J. Black seemed to own everything in the town and was a kind of folk hero. This wine, named after him, is just as interesting. The low yields and aging in French, Hungarian and American oak presents an amalgam of juicy, spicy flavors worthy of a charred steak lamb burger.
