To secure the best possible prices for our members, we have been going directly to the source: the wineries. We've sampled enough wines from all over the world to get a notion of what we like and what our members like. To that end, we are building our selections from wines in barrels and tanks from producers we have trusted for decades.
In this case it came from the Giguiere family with whom we have been dealing with for over 40 years. Their estate vineyard in Northern California's Yolo County is practically next door to Napa and shares much of Napa's soil and climate, but fortunately, not its prices. Our blend is 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, which is the star of the show. But we like complexity in our wines and the only way to get that is to blend in other wines that have different characteristics, yet don't compete with each other. In this case, we found that adding 13% Petit Verdot, 8% Malbec and 2% Petite Sirah gave us exactly what we wanted to expand our superb Cabernet Sauvignon. Believe it or not, that 2% Petite Sirah was noticeable as it strengthened the finish we were looking for.
The result is a heady, extracted offering with all the power and glory Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys expanded upon by the supporting players. Big flavors of ripe plum, cassis and raspberries brought into focus with tannins that are right up to, but not over the edge. Pairing with a charred New York steak or a lamb ragout would be a glorious accompaniment.
