Our selection is an ancient and heralded property whose history goes back 1,000 years when it was tended to by the Benedictine Monks. Like most of the properties in the Cotes du Rhone, Signac has several unique qualities. The 50 acres of grapes are situated on a slope where the wind circles the vines gently enough not to disturb them but making it very difficult for insects to do so. It is like a natural pesticide. As a result, Signac is nearly organic.
The situation is further enhanced by the fact that the soil is made up of limestone and a dry seabed, where water flowed millions of years ago. That produces the greatest natural fertilizer vines can receive and is the reason the wines produced here are so outstanding.Rose wine has captured the fancy of the American wine drinking public. We were one of the last ones to catch on. Rose has been a staple in the Rhone for hundreds of years and is considered one of the finest, if not the finest, Rose produced.
This lovely gem is the classic blend of Grenache and Syrah, which accounts for both its power and its poise. Too many expect a Rose to be light and fluffy. You get none of that here. There are certainly the cool floral fantasies, but there is also the body, which is almost reminiscent of a red wine. Strawberry and floral hints gracefully descend on the palate with cranberry notes that would stand up to anything from lamb sausage to smoked salmon.
