It used to be that whenever we would come across a situation that couldn't be explained, we would ask questions. In the wine business, this happens so often that now we just shake our heads.
In this case, it's a company that we have been doing a lot of business with for over a decade. Most of the wines they sourced for us became selections because they were outstanding values. This wine is one of them, so it was a no-brainer to make it a selection.
The shaking of the head part came when we were told that the founder of the company was no longer there. The guy who made it all happen had a disagreement with his board of directors and poof, gone. Oh well, we'll go on.
This wine is one of those blends that defies reason and yet tastes great. It is primarily Merlot, which makes up 50% of the blend, with Zinfandel, Petite Verdot, Petite Sirah and Syrah rounding out the mix. As if that wasn't enough, they aged the wine in used bourbon barrels.
At that point, they could have told us it was made of Martian rocks and aged in truck tires! The only thing that matters is the wine and this one, as a matter of fact, is nothing short of spectacular.
It's all about balance. The Merlot softens the rough edges of the bigger grapes yet allows them to retain their boldness. Lovely blueberry scents emanate from the glass, then the rich cherry and earth smack you in the mouth. And you smile.
