Only a company the size and scope of Bronco could get away with a wine like this. We say this because the principle grape here is Arinarnoa. We love learning about grapes we never heard of and this one fits the bill.

For a grape with such an exotic name, it comes as a surprise that it is a cross between Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon. Its history, however, is even more convoluted. The initial cross was developed by Pierre Durquety in 1956. It was a cross between Merlot and Petit Verdot. It wasn't until recently when DNA testing became the new mantra that we learned of its true identity.

How Arinarnoa got to the United States is anyone's guess, but it is pleasant part of an international trio of grapes, the other two being Refosco, originally from Italy and Zinfandel, originally from Croatia. Its name comes from the Basque dialect: arin meaning "light" and arno meaning "wine." Again, a story almost as fascinating as the wine.

Bronco is a 100-year-old winery with headquarters in Ceres, California, but winery operations all over the state. They need several wineries to process the 10 million cases of wine they produce every year.

Our selection is a lively, fun wine that dances and swings on the palate. It would be comfortable at the opera, after a filet and duchess potatoes, and at the game with a pepperoni pizza.
