Once again, we scored an outstanding wine at a fraction of its original price. It's very rare that we are able to feature a single vineyard Chardonnay from Monterey in the Classic series. But when the opportunity arises, we grab it.
It has now been 50 years since the Zaninovich Family have been farming the vineyards of Monterey. In 1998, they acquired the Muirwood Zanetta Vineyard located in the Arroyo Seco appellation of Monterey, considered one of the finest areas in California for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
To accentuate every nuance from the grapes, they were picked early in the morning and fermented at very cold temperatures to allow the complex flavors to develop slowly and distinctly. After fermentation the wine was placed in French oak barrels where it rested for 10 months to further pick up nuances. Each barrel was tasted and only the best ones were selected to have the Muirwood label.
It may sound odd, but even though all the grapes came from the same vineyard and were fermented at the same time, once they're placed in barrels they change from each individual barrel and the differences can be extraordinary. The selection here displays a harmonious whole that expresses the true nature of the grape and its elements. Green apple, peach and citrus are the high notes with a strong finish highlighting a lovely experience.
