Carving Board comes to us from The Thomas Allen Vineyards and Winery in Lodi. It is a partnership between Allen Lombardi and Thomas Michael Stokes, whose winemaking families go back multiple generations. It was Thomas' grandfather, Bill, who planted his first Zinfandel here in 1954. Three generations later, they now farm one of the oldest Zinfandel vineyards in Lodi.
The Lodi Appellation was approved as an American Viticulture Area (AVA) in 1986. The region leads all California wine districts in wine production, more than Napa and Sonoma Counties combined. But, quantity isn't the only thing Lodi has going for it. Though in the middle of the Central Valley, Lodi gets a cool breeze from the San Pablo Bay that is not found anywhere else in the valley.
It's no accident that we have featured more wines from Lodi in the last several years then in the entire history of the Wine of the Month Club. A lot of Napa and Sonoma producers would add Lodi grapes in small quantities to extend their own wines. So, we decided to just select the best wines directly from Lodi.
Carving Board has all the ingredients we love in a Chardonnay. It is lower in alcohol than most Chardonnays, sports just enough oak to round out the flavors and exhibits creaminess and minerality to the hilt. It can cut a swath through cuisines from Chinese Chicken Salad to a Thai Tom Yum soup or Veal Oscar.
