This whopper of a wine comes to us from our good friends at Matchbook in Yolo County's Dunnigan Hills. It is owned and operated by John Giguiere, his wife Lane and brother Karl. The vineyard was established in 2002. All three grew up in Yolo County and have deep ties to the local area. The Giguiere brothers are 3rd generation farmers in the region.

In 1973 they all moved home from college to save the family farm and ended up creating a wine region. They planted their first 10-acre vineyard in 1981 on land that had traditionally been farmed to wheat. In 1993, due to their success, the Dunnigan Hills American Viticultural Area was created, putting northern Yolo County on the map as a premium grape growing region. They developed over 3,000 acres of grapes on the old family farm before selling the property and the adjacent winery in 2000.

Instead of retiring to a sunny beach, the Giguiere's bought a neighboring sheep ranch and started all over again. The Matchbook Vineyard is named for the Giguiere brothers' fascination with matches as boys. Their parents weren't amused as on more than one occasion they almost burned down the house.

Our selection is a blend of mostly Petite Sirah and small percentages of Petit Verdot, Teroldego, and Malbec. The Petite Sirah dominates with its imposing flavors of scintillating strawberry, black cherry, and earth. Aging in French, Hungarian, and American oak barrels helped tame it down and ready for duck confit or a lamb ragu.
