Sun Goddess is a partnership between mega star and multiple award winner, Mary J. Blige, and Mario Fantinel of the Fantinel Winery in Northern Italy's iconic wine area, Friuli. The name Sun Goddess comes from Blige's nickname as a child and is a fitting name for the Italian sun seems to shine brighter in Friuli than anywhere on Earth.
Blige has been a major star for nearly three decades. She enjoys a staggering 32 Grammy nominations, two Academy Award nominations, two Golden Globe nominations, and a SAG nomination. She is nothing short of a global superstar with worldwide sales of more than 50 million albums. Fortunately for us, she is an intense lover of Italian wines, which is what brought her to Fantinel. Mario Fantinel is a third generation vigneron whose family planted their vineyard more than 50 years ago. Back then Friuli didn't have the reputation it enjoys today; it had to be earned and has since been often referred to as "The Bordeaux of Italy." Higher praise is not possible.
The reasons are simple. Friuli is one of the best areas to grow the Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. While the wines can be compared to Bordeaux in quality, their flavor profiles are quite different. Bordeaux power and intensity is evident from the first sip. Friuli takes all the exotic flavors of these grapes and softens them. Instead of begging for a charred steak, you may enjoy this with roast chicken or turkey. The enveloping richness of currant, cranberry, and pomegranate could possibly be compared to richness of Blige's voice.
