Chile has been growing grapes for wine since the 1500s, but the region's red wine production really took off once the French introduced varietals like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1800s. Despite the long history of wine making, it wasn't until the 1980s that the Chilean wine industry started gaining recognition for its exceptional red wines. Two varietals featured in this wine, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere, are mainly responsible for Chile's rise in the wine world, particularly when used in the country's now renowned red blends.
The Central Valley, where we get this red blend from Revuelta, is home to Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and Merlot grapes. This region forms the core of Chile's most popular wines and blends. Typically, Cabernet Sauvignon grown in this region showcases berry flavors and silky tannins, alongside intense aromas of dried herbs. The Carmenere offers a bouquet of dried herbs and bell pepper and is complemented by a palate highlighting black cherry. While the Merlot grown here exhibits coffee notes with a nose of cassis and orange.
This blend is a beautiful dark violet red, with a nose of blackberries and cassis. On the palate, you get notes of caramel and hints of red berry jam, that are rounded out with soft tannins and a smooth finish. Pair this wine with a sirloin steak salad with roasted tomatoes and red onion. It will also pair well with grilled pork, or roast lamb served with a traditional Chilean topping made with onions, tomatoes, garlic, and cilantro.
