With his father, Pablo Cremaschi Furlotti tends to the vineyard his great-grandfather planted over 120 years ago in Chile's Loncomilla Valley, located at the heart of the country's prime wine district, Maule.

The soil here is quite unique. Most of the great vineyards are built on hillsides because the geological occurrence that created them by forcing rocks up to the surface also created perfect conditions for drainage. Vines don't like a lot of water, so drainage is extremely important.

Loncomilla is pretty flat, so one wouldn't think of it as ideal. However, it is 3,000 feet above sea level, and the force that created this vast, flat space also forced the rocks and sea matter up to this plateau. It basically created a huge, level hill.

To this perfect soil add perfect climate, and you have a match that is almost unparalleled in the world of wine. They never have the frost, hail, heat waves or cold snaps that can plague most other vineyards in the world. And their altitude keeps away annoying bugs that eat plants and bothersome critters that eat grapes. We call it win/win.

We've found some amazing Sauvignon Blancs from Chile lately. This one completely knocked our socks off. The purity of fruit matched with both presence and delicacy is a rare joy to experience.

The wine glistens in the glass. The aromas of new flowers, fresh herbs and citrus blossoms envelop the atmosphere and finally anoint the palate.
