Our selection is crafted by O'Neill Vintners, one of the largest wineries in the U.S., producing the equivalent of more than 2,000 cases per day. It's almost inconceivable in many ways, but they've been chugging along for nearly 30 years. Their vast resources allow them to draw from their own and others' vineyards to craft incredible wines at incredible prices.
The name reflects the sentiment that every wine has a backstory. While most of us just open a bottle and enjoy it with a meal, friends, and family. The backstory of how it got to our table is always interesting.
In this case it is winemaker Mark Rasmussen's quest to find the best blend of grapes to create the best wine he could from the vintage. For this jewel, he chose grapes from their holdings in some of the warmer areas of Lodi, but not as warm as the areas where they grow their Zinfandel. He then used grapes from some of the cooler, riverbench vineyards in the Sacramento Delta. The Lodi grapes provided the lush fruit while the Delta grapes provided the backbone and finish.
It's all that fine-tuning that turns out great wines like this Backstory selection. It is what gives us the aromas of white pepper and black currants expanded with touches of cranberry and cedar. Its lovely finish was made to go with a peppercorn steak, wild mushroom soup or a carnitas burrito lavished with salsa verde.
