Vinho Verde is one of the most unique wines in the world. The phrase in Portuguese translates to "green wine," as the wine itself has a greenish tinge to it. It is almost never even vintage dated because the assumption is that the wine is very young. It is made from a variety of grapes that most people never heard of and fewer can pronounce.

There are no individual estates here; all the wines are made by co-operatives. And honestly, the wines can almost make themselves, as the climate and soil are pretty much the same over the entire region.

But, a few are a cut above, and Bonina is one of them. First of all, they vintage date their wines, so you know what you're getting. They also have a star winemaker, Jos? Antas Oliveira who is internationally known, which is unusual in Vinho Verde. Bonina's wines are definitely at the top of the quality scale.

Our selection comes form the northernmost part of Portugal, bordering on the sliver of Spain called R?as Baixas. Not surprisingly, many of the same grapes are grown in both places and with great success.

What separates this wine from most is the greenish tinge in the glass. Then there's the lime-scented nose, followed by shy peach and guava aromas and, finally, the clean, crisp, tart middle and finish. This is a very light, refreshing wine with piquant acidity and a lip-smacking finish that will complement any dish.

Paul has always sent out good wine, and every so often he sends out something extraordinary - and this is one of those. There is a perfect balance of fruit and citrus. It's clean and crisp. Wow!
