Steven DeCosta leads the Root Cause team of talented young winemakers at O'Neill Vintners, focusing on creating wines with character that come from premier appellations. Ensuring the highest level of winemaking standards, he also oversees research and development and introduces new technology that is implemented across the winery.
Steven uses his advanced degrees in chemistry and microbiology to create wines with a varietal focus and clarity and those attributes are present in every one of his wines. When Steven is not in the vineyard or production facility, you can find him traveling, cooking or reading philosophy. It's interesting to note that most good winemakers are also good cooks. The philosophy is the same.
There are few winemakers with that kind of experience and fewer still working with different climates, soils and grapes from all over the world. Few have made better use of that experience than Steven. The proof is this selection.
If any other winemaker had told us they were going to make Pinot Noir from Clarksburg and Lodi we would have looked askance at him or her. But, we figured if anybody could do it, Steven could, and he even surprised us.
The sweet/tart cherry is unmistakable Pinot Noir in the nose and on the palate. The lovely spice, cotton candy and mint components would handle anything from sausage and peppers to pork tenderloin with a mustard sage sauce.
