Vrai Copain means "true friends" in French. Here it refers to the natural Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. These grapes have always blended well together, like good friends.Sometimes, however, grapes don't get along, kinda like friends. It takes a master blender to fine tune a wine by adding a little of this and a little of that. The process is much like a great chef fine tuning a dish to find an ideal balance.
Balance is the seamless integration of complementary flavors to produce a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Not as easy as it sounds. Nobody does this better than Chris Cameron of Rancho Tierra Rejada in Paso Robles.
Of course, having over 700 acres of prime grapes doesn't hurt. No matter what Mother Nature throws at him, he has the resources to make a good wine great. It's an enviable position a lot of winemakers wish they were in as well.
For this offering, Chris selected Cabernet Sauvignon from the lower vineyard, where the sun ripens the grapes to very rich levels - almost to the point of being too much. He then toned down the richness with Cabernet Franc, for its ample tannins. To finish, he added a dollop of Merlot to apply a different flavor profile and add complexity.
The result is a perfect balance between flavor and presence - a wonderful choice to share with friends.
