The term Lapis Luna means "moonstone" in Latin but the winemaker's serendipitous version lists it as "blue moon." The owners were so confident of the quality of their wines that their suggestion was that wines like these come along once in a blue moon.

Lapis Luna was founded in 1999 when two friends, Michael Florian, who was then marketing director of the Hess Collection Winery, and Bruce Wise, who was the chief financial officer there, decided to form a company together.

A third partner, Sal Nuccio, joined them a short time later. Sal was born in Palermo, Italy, and had been in the grocery business for over 30 years. Their vision was to have all of the business part of the wine business in place and that's what they did.

Next came the hard part, making the wines worthy of their moniker. They have certainly done that with superb renditions of Merlot, Cabernet, Old Vine Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Chardonnay.

The grapes for our selection were sourced from mountain vineyards whose rocky slopes allow proper drainage for the vines. As a result, the roots need to meander through the stones to find water. In so doing, they pick up valuable nutrients as well as a sturdier and healthier branch system above ground.

The grand prize for a healthy vine is great wine. This is textbook mountain Chardonnay with a bounty of small bits of great flavors like green apple, citrus, buttered toast and lemon drop.
