Summerland Vineyards hit the ground running some 30 years ago with a Chardonnay that took the country by storm. It was one of the hottest wines in the US. The ownership has changed, but not much else. Summerland is now owned by Terravant in Buellton who added their significant vineyard holdings to the mix and created a powerful wine source in the Central Coast. These guys will do anything it takes to make great wine, even if it means buying grapes from another vineyard other than their own.

That was the case here when they were allowed to purchase grapes from Orcutt Road and Paragon Vineyards in San Luis Obispo, one of the most famous names in California. Jack Niven pioneered wine grape planting here in the Edna Valley in 1973. The uniqueness of the region led him to petition for it to become an AVA in 1982, which was one of the first in the Central Coast. This is coolest growing region in all of California, as cited in a study by the University of Southern Oregon. It is a mere 5.4 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Formed over 120 million years ago by colliding tectonic plates in the Pacific, Edna Valley has become the gold standard in San Luis Obispo.

Our selection speaks for itself. The piquant green apple and kiwi notes in the mouth is further heightened by luscious vanilla, a touch of honey and a bit of spice. All this nuanced loveliness was made for seared scallops in a butter and saffron sauce or crab enchilada.
