PDQ is fashioned by the Ehlers family, one of the founding pioneers of the Lodi Viticultural area. Herman Ehlers was making wines from his grapes here nearly 100 years ago. The winery and vineyards are still run by his descendants.
Lodi was little known back then. It was looked at the same as Fresno and Modesto in California's Central Valley. They were unceremoniously known for their hot climate and large yields for making wines suitable to be sold in jugs. Lodi is anything but. Located between Fresno and Sacramento, right in the middle of the Central Valley it is the recipient of what begins in the cool San Pablo Bay in San Francisco and heads East, straight through and unobstructed, ending smack dab in Lodi.
While crafting Chardonnay in Lodi wasn't easy, it was easier than Modesto or Madera. However, the Ehlers family decided to head north to one of the most respected areas in California, Monterey. This appellation was once thought to be too cold to plant grapes but that has changed along with growing methods; this selection is a spectacular example.
Our selection is an amazing example. Here, we get all the nuances of a cool climate with the long, slow development of green apple, minerals, and piquant acidity. The wine is at its best in the mid-palate where most wines fall off. PDQ shines. Powered by just a touch of oak, this beauty could grace any dish from mushroom stuffed squab to sand dabs with lemon and capers.
