Curran Creek is the premium label of O'Neill Vintners, founded by Jeff O'Neill in 2004 as a production facility for winemakers without the financing to build their own winery. O'Neill also owns vineyards all over the state and crafts many of their own wines in their state-of-the-art facility in Buellton.

O'Neill has grown to the point that they have several head winemakers who concentrate on certain brands. In essence, it's like a lot of small wineries under one roof. Each winemaker has the ability to use the vast resources and vineyards available and make his or her decisions about how to craft the wine.

One of those is Steven DeCosta. He was hired as lead winemaker at O'Neill Vintner's and in less than three years became Director of Winemaking. That's quite a statement considering O'Neill is one of the 30 largest wineries in US.

DeCosta doesn't feel like he's working for a winery this size, because he gets to concentrate on small lots of wine and different areas in the vineyard from which he gets to choose. His training at Fresno State also included vineyard management making him one of the few winemakers who understands the demands of a vineyard.

It certainly shows here, with this superb selection. Pinot Grigio is the most planted white grape in Italy and is gaining traction here. Its light and lovely presence is perfect for appetizers or less commanding dishes such as salads and seafood. Peach and guava pervade and make everything taste better.
