Nobilissima inhabits the hallowed ground of Chianti, one of Italy's most prized grape-growing regions. The winery was established in 1908 by Giovanni Cielo and continues to this day, with the fourth generation Cielo now in control.

Like most family operations, they started with a small plot of land and, as they succeeded in growing and selling their grapes, they added to their acreage. As the demand for their grapes increased, they were able to construct a small winery in the 1960s and build it into a sizable business.

They were still grape growers who sold most of their grapes but kept the best for themselves. A practice that has been a tradition for centuries.

In this case, it is making their wine from 100% Sangiovese. Until 1985, this was outlawed. If you wanted to call your wine Chianti, you had to use a blend of grapes, including white. The formula was decided upon over 100 years earlier, and that was the law.

But eventually the law had to be changed, because it was obvious that the white grapes only detracted from the star of the show, Sangiovese.

This wine is every reason why Sangiovese is a star. The unmistakable aromas of black cherry and earth mix with the leather and spice to present an endless swirl of flavors that seem to never end. Trying this wine with the grilled meats of the area is absolute bliss.
