To say that we love featuring wines like this would be an understatement. After all, how many wines from Modra have you tried? For those of you without immediate access to an atlas, it's in Slovakia, roughly 100 miles north of Budapest. Father and son duo, Marek and Igor Rariga, founded the winery in 2003.
From the very beginning, their goal was to respect the soil on which their grapes are grown. Their climate is similar to Germany, so it was not too much of a stretch to decide to plant Riesling.
Their respect for the soil germinated into a totally organic vineyard. So much so that even the herbal mixture they use to ward off harmful pests is actually grown on the property. That would be a first for us.
Riesling is one of the four noble grapes, along with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. The term refers to the natural tendency of these four varietals to produce less clusters than any other grape. All other varietals need to be cut back much more to inhibit production, otherwise the grapes would extract less from the soil and be fairly tasteless as a result.
Our selection is textbook Riesling with all the sensuality and charisma that only this grape can bring. The nose is fresh cut flowers, flecks of clove and apricot. The palate soars with peach and pear, lime, apricot and melon. It finishes with all of them held in check with a lasting hint of the soil from which it came.
