Without question, Alta Pavina is one of the most unique wineries we've ever featured. The first thing you read on their website is Pinot Noir. Who knew? But, it's a crazy revelation that they planted the first Pinot Noir in Spain 35 years ago.

Pavina is the passion of the Ortega brothers, Diego and Hugo, who felt that their property in Valladolid is the most Burgundian setting in Spain. The name literally means "the ultimate distinction," so they started pretty strong. But they didn't stop there. They pulled off what could be called the wine coup of the century. They hired Claude Bourguignon as their vineyard manager. Claude worked the vineyards at Romanee-Conti estate.

Romanee-Conti is considered one of the greatest, if not the greatest Pinot Noir in the world. And, its price reflects this. To put it into perspective, you could buy 10 cases of Pavina for the price of one bottle of Romanee-Conti. So, having Claude's experience with this grape was essential to the success of Pavina. If this didn't turned enough heads around, they decided to blend their Pinot Noir with Spain's national grape, Tempranillo. It turned out to be pure genius.

Here, the soft, caressing allure of Pinot Noir mixes with the dramatic expression of Tempranillo. We had no idea what to expect. What we got was perfect integration of spice and candy apple mixed with saddle leather, espresso notes and pomegranate. This stunning blend would smack through a lamb loin charred over an open fire or wild boar sausages and onions.
