Peynac is a label produced by one of the Languedoc's premium co-ops, Les Vignerons du Narbonnais. They were formed in 1935 with the difficult task of trying to improve quality so that they could demand more for their wines. At the time, the prices producers received for their grapes was less than their cost to grow them.

They were hit with heavy resistance from the wine community because Languedoc wines were supposed to be cheap. By today's standards, they represent one of the best values for wine in the world. Obviously, they reached their goal. Unlike most of France, the Languedoc has no restrictions as to which grapes they can grow and where. Anything, anywhere goes. The beauty is that it gives plenty of room for experimentation, for which the producers are famous. But, after decades of experiments, like almost every other appellation in the world, it became rather obvious which varietals grew the best here.

Their proximity to the Rhone Valley offering similar climate and soil made the decision for them. Yet, there are standouts of which Peynac proudly points to with this incredible blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. We were more than stunned when we first tasted it. We kept looking at the label to find Bordeaux listed, but that pesky Languedoc name kept showing up. Regardless, this is a spectacular wine with all the earth and berry nuance we expect from Bordeaux without the price. Matching with a steak and kidney pie or roast pork would be heavenly.
