As with most great wines, the people behind them are as important as the wine itself. In this case it is winemaker Roberto de la Mota whose father, Raul, was one of Argentina's greatest winemakers. Roberto has equaled his father's prestige. His reputation was further heightened when, in 1996, he headed the winemaking partnership between Bodega Chandon and none other than Chateau Cheval Blanc, considered one of the greatest wines in the world.

Partnerships like this are rare, but not unheard of. However, when one hears the words, Cheval Blanc, the expectation level goes up exponentially. We're talking royalty here. Both Cheval Blanc and Roberto know that, and also know they have to deliver on it. They haven't disappointed.

The wine is named after one of the historic roads leading to the winery that has seen over 100 vintages cross its path. This history is not taken lightly and must show itself in every wine.

What our Malbec shows is a breeding and presence above what one would expect. But, then again, expectations are high here. There is a freshness and yet a depth from the very first whiff that alerts you that something is special here. Red currant, violets and cherry are delicately mixed with vanilla and earth tones that offer great promise.

That promise is delivered with the seamless integration on the palate of all those elements held in check with a perfect tannic structure. It literally screams out for an Argentine BBQ of rare meats and a spicy chimichurri.
