Big Red comes to us from the Franzia Family, the largest vineyard owner in California. They started growing grapes in the 50s in the Central Valley, making outstanding, affordable wine in jugs for the masses. They even set up their own wholesale business to help keep their prices down.
Owner, Fred Franzia, had a cousin in the wine business who came to him and told him that he was breaking away from the family winery and starting his own. He wanted his cousin, Fred, to be his wholesaler. That cousin was Robert Mondavi, and for 20 years, they each made each other very successful. Mondavi became the most famous winery in California, and Franzia was his pipeline.
Franzia branched out to other parts of the state from Napa to Paso Robles and Santa Barbara. As he grew, he also manufactured his bottles, labels, corks, foils, and even cartons. They now have several facilities making and bottling wine 24 hours a day.
Our blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles, and it shows at every turn. Big, ripe, and buxom black cherry, plum, anise cassis, and vanilla permeates the senses at every turn. Its lower alcohol allows all the flavors to come full force and demands challenging food. Tournedos of beef, flavored with ample amounts of garlic, onion, and ketchup would open up every possible flavor receptor imaginable.
