Monsegur is named after the village which houses the winery. It was founded in 1265 by the wife of Henry III, the King of England. A millennium of wars and strife only made it stronger, as it survived all invaders and sieges, when others would have fallen.

Then, in 1929, the Depression started in America and it produced a ripple effect all over the world. Bordeaux was severely affected because it, basically, lost a rather large customer. In 1935, a group of 15 winegrowers decided to band together and rebuild the winery with its storied past. Monsegur grew and prospered, making great gains in modern improvements and technological advancements. Today, it consists of 170 growers, farming 300 acres of grapes, sustainably and organically.

Things took an even better turn when they hired Philippe Moute as assistant winemaker in 1996. Just two years later, he became head winemaker and since then has become one of France's superstars. Among other things, Monsegur boasts the same soil components as Chateau Petrus, considered the greatest of all Bordeaux wines. Moute takes advantage of this by crafting a wine made from 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. It is his crowning achievement and an absolute knockout of a selection.

Here is all the rich soil, black fruits and stunning presence you would expect from great Bordeauxs. The complex cherry, plum and cassis flavors point to a charred ribeye or venison loin with dried cherries and rosemary.
