Caves du Fournalet is crafted in the Rhone Valley by the powerhouse company, Caves des Papes. The name means "the place of the Pope," and refers to the most revered wine here, Chateauneuf-du-Pape. In the early 14th Century, the King of France, Phillip IV, was feuding with the Pope about how much influence the Vatican had over France. Consequently, the king decided to name his own pope in a reconstructed castle in Avignon. Chateauneuf-du-Pape means "the new home of the pope." That lasted almost 100 years, but by then the wine was famous.

Our selection is crafted by one of the first women winemakers in the Rhone Valley, Armelle Barbanson. She studied at the University of Montpellier and upon graduation was grabbed up by Caves des Papes as an assistant winemaker. She quickly moved up to winemaker a short time later. Cotes du Rhone is one of the most unique wine areas in the world. It is divided into the Northern Rhone and the Southern Rhone. Though the name is the same, the two couldn't be more different. The Northern Rhone features one red, Syrah, and one white, Viognier. The Southern Rhone is home to no less than 13 different grape varieties.

All wines labeled Cotes du Rhone are made in the South. Grenache is the main grape here followed by Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, and a host of others. Our selection is a classic which features these grapes. The fresh fruit and spice are unmistakably Rhone. The sweet, tart cherries add a sidebar to the mix and finishes with a flourish.
