Leon Perdigal was the son of a master cooper in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. As such, he hung around winemakers discussing the properties and limitations oak brings to the wine. He became so knowledgeable about the subject that when Mason Ogier was founded in 1859, he was installed as their first winemaker. To no one's surprise, he was the first in the area to age his wines in oak barrels.

Over 150 years later, the Perdigal family still uses oak barrels and even share a winemaker with Ogier, Armelle Barbanson. She is one of the few women winemakers here and, to no one's surprise, one of the best. She may also be the only female winemaker to craft a white wine in the Rhone.

White wine in the Rhone Valley accounts for less than 5% of the wines made here. But, that's no reason to ignore them. They are spectacular and probably so because they are so rare, and winemakers take particular interest in making them perfect. Our selection is nothing short of a perfect example.

Armelle uses no oak here to preserve the natural freshness and character of each grape. The grapes are Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Viognier. A rather unique mix in that the complexity of flavors is staggering. From spices to flowers to fruit and soil, here is a heady mixture that would foil all comers from grilled salmon to spicy Portuguese smoked sausage.
