Mas de Lunes was acquired in 1936 by the Jeanjean family who owns one of the oldest estates in the Languedoc founded in 1870 by Maurice-Vincent Jeanjean. Today, the 5th generation controls nine estates and 500 acres of grapes in the region.

The same year they acquired Mas de Lunes, they did something that was considered revolutionary. They decided to escape the norm of high yields of mediocre wines, and concentrate on quality instead of quantity. They also began experimenting with natural substances to control pests and diseases in the vineyard. It wasn't even called organic then, but it is now.

In their quest for quality, they lowered their yields to nearly half of what the norm was at the time. It was even lower than the maximum legal yields of Bordeaux. As if that wasn't enough, they totally blew the whistle when they aged their reds in oak barrels. None of their peers thought they could become successful because now they had to charge higher prices and who would pay those prices for a wine from the Languedoc? Apparently, you could have asked those standing in line around the winery waiting to purchase their offerings.

Though the prices were higher, they were still less than wines from the Rhone and just as good. Many followed their lead and now the Languedoc is considered one of the greatest buys in French wines. Our selection proves this point. This classic Rhone blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache aged in oak is a bigger and beefier wine than most. The classy flavors and length are perfect for beef Bourgogne or chicken with 40 cloves of garlic.
