We have featured the wines of Bob Pepi at the Wine of the Month Club for nearly 40 years and we always look forward to it. He is one of the nicest people in this business and his wines are always superb.
Bob grew up in the wine business in Napa Valley. His family started a small vineyard and sold their grapes to eager wineries. But gradually they gained enough recognition to be able to build their own winery in 1981 and use their estate grapes. They built their reputation quickly by overachieving with every wine they've made, focusing more on the quality of the wine than on the price.
When they sold the winery in 1994, Bob consulted all over the world and also learned about different grapes and different winemaking styles. With this new knowledge in tow, he founded Eponymous wines in 2000 and rebuilt the Pepi name.
In his travels, Pepi was introduced to wines he had never worked with like Pinot Blanc and Riesling. At that point he realized what he had been missing and set out to change that. As usual, he has done a masterful job.
Our selection is a unique blend of those two grapes. It is the first one we've ever tasted and while we were a little surprised at the combination, we were also stunned. The Riesling accounts for the honeysuckle and orange blossom while the Pinot Blanc adds a touch of banana and pineapple. The marriage is a surreal offering that could handle anything from merguez sausages to steamed clams.
