Avelino Vegas founded his winery over 70 years ago in Santiuste de San Juan Bautista, a province of Segovia in central Spain. In 1982 they purchased property in Rueda, easily one of the most up and coming appellations in the country. They had already established themselves as one of the premium red wine producers in Spain and now could include whites as well.

The winery is managed by Avelino's sons, and his granddaughter, Cristina, is the winemaker. She holds a degree in Oenology from the University of Bordeaux, which explains why our selection is the uniquely non-Spanish blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot. We've often wondered why Bordeaux varietals weren't as prolific in Spain as they were in most of the wine producing countries. Part of the answer is that the Spanish are very pleased with their own indigenous grapes and never felt the need to plant others. However, the fact is that a lot of Spain's terroirs are perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon and this selection is pouring proof.

We were stunned by the presence and complexity of this selection. If we had tasted it blind, we may have guessed Bordeaux or California, but with an outside twist. That twist is from the grapes grown in Segovia, just outside Madrid. The deep, cardinal color is the precursor to the aromas of wild plum, anise, and cranberry. The Petit Verdot adds a touch of softness and spice that spreads the richness of the Cabernet to every pore. From a lamb ragout to a charred New York, it can't miss.
