Portugal's Vinho Verde region has gone through nothing short of a revolution in the last 30 years. Most of the growers had small lots of vineyards and took their grapes to one of the many co-ops to crush, ferment, age, and bottle. There were very few single estates that produced and bottled their own wine.

While much of Vinho Verde is made in the co-ops, a larger percentage than ever before is being produced by small, single estates like our Calcada. The winery itself was built in the 17th Century and is named after the ornate tiles that decorate the surroundings. It didn't become a winery until 1917 when the building was purchased by Lago Cerqueira and turned into its present day estate. Calcada is one of the few who have consistently made their own wines and is now run by the 5th generation.

The name translates to "green wine" and refers to the greenish tinge it shows off in the glass. Green is also a term for youthful and these wines are best when consumed young. Most of the bottlings are not even vintage dated except for the estate bottlings like our Calcada.

Vinho Verde is one of the most consistent wine regions in the world. We've never experienced a vintage or bottling that wasn't up to its reputation. Our selection exceeds that bar. The lovely orange blossom nose signals the citrus, guava, and quince to follow. Everything is held by the wonderful acids which begs for a pasta with clams or oysters Rockefeller.
