Seeing Dry Creek as a selection is like going home to visit family. It is just one year shy of 50 that we featured Dry Creek's very first vintage, his 1972 Chardonnay. The owner, Dave Stare delivered the wine himself and we have been close friends ever since.

Unlike today's billionaires who want to have a wine toy to play with, Dave got into the wine business with a very bizarre attitude. He thought he could make money at it. Back then it wasn't as far-fetched as it is today. So, with his Northwestern MBA in hand, he founded the first winery in Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley since Prohibition. His wines have been at the top of the chain ever since.

Having a great love for Vouvray from the Loire, he decided to produce Chenin Blanc. His only problem was that he didn't grow Chenin Blanc. Therefore, he researched all the Chenin Blanc growers in the state. There were plenty as it was used primarily as a blending grape for jug wines. Dave thought it was of much more regal stature than that.

His Chenin is now considered the best in the state. He found an old vine vineyard in Clarksburg 30 years ago and hasn't skipped a beat since. The peach, mango, and hints of pineapple are the cornerstones here. The wine literally explodes with flavor from watermelon and honeysuckle to orange blossom and mango. It's a can't miss with a shrimp soup in lemongrass stock or chicken Milanese.
