Otto comes to us from Cascina Liuzzi, founded in 2000. The winery began when Otto Liuzzi and his wife Sil purchased a farmhouse in the middle of one of Italy's most famous vineyard areas, Monferrato, located in Piedmont.

The Liuzzi family's journey was a colorful one. To amass the resources to establish their own winery, they moved to Zimbabwe with their son, Stefano, and worked in a winery there. Little did they know that the political climate in Zimbabwe would take a turn, leading to civil war. They managed to escape with their lives and enough money to buy the farmhouse in Italy.

Since quality was their guiding hands, they had to make wine from the best grapes possible. Monferrato is one of the best regions and the Barbera from here is an exemplary wine. Barbera is now highly esteemed here, but it wasn't always. It originally was used as a blending grape because of its dark color and extract. But, a few winemakers saw its potential and elevated it almost to the level of Italy's "king of grapes" -- the Nebbiolo. Monferrato wine is now a renowned varietal.

This Monferrato wine carries the "Superiore" designation. It is not a fanciful name. It is a legal definition signifying that this bottle of 2013 Barbera d'Asti has met certain conditions that represent a higher quality.

Low yields and oak aging have transformed this once derided grape into a magnificent offering. Barbera d'Asti 2013 is a large wine with power and grace to spare, plus a softer side and dense, exotic flavors.
