Flying Cloud comes to us from Stephen Ross Dooley of Stephen Ross Wines in Edna Valley. Stephen is probably the best unknown winemaker in the world. I say that because I've known him and his wines for 25+ years and they never fail to amaze me.
His interest in making wine began in his childhood home in Minnesota, where he tried his hand at making wine from apples and rhubarb. It turned serious when he decided to go to UC Davis for his enology degree and pursue his lifelong dream.
He worked in Napa and both hemispheres before landing a job at Edna Valley Vineyards. It was here that he made his "name." The wines were so good, we all wanted to know who made them. After seven great years there, he founded his own winery with his wife, Paula, and it's been one hit after another ever since.
Stephen's quiet demeanor is one reason why he has never sought the spotlight. He figured his wines spoke for him. They do, and loudly.
At Edna Valley, he made one of the best Sauvignon Blancs in California, and he hasn't skipped a beat since. This beauty is no exception.
The blend is 78% Sauvignon Blanc and 22% Albarino. The first grape adds the structure and presence and the Albari?o the lilting fruit flavors of guava, touches of grapefruit and white peach.
