Vermentino is one of Italy's finest white wines. It is produced in several areas, but none are better than the ones that come from Gallura on the island of Sardinia. The Sardinians are very proud of this wine as it is the first DOCG wine on the island.
Italian wine laws are very specific. Most European wines are named after the place where the grapes are grown. Since they've been doing this for so long, they have a long history of knowing what grows best and where.
The laws are referred to as DOC, which states that the wine has be made of certain grapes to be called the name of the area. Several years ago, the DOCG designation was instituted. The "G" stands for guarantee, which means the producer must submit the wine to a panel to determine if it's worthy of the designation.
Pedres was founded nearly 200 years ago by the Mancini family. Today it is headed by the same family in the personage of Giovanni Mancini. But it wasn't until 2002 when the new generation of Mancini's headed in a different direction. Instead of making everyday wines, they decided that high quality would be their new mantra. The first wine from this new strategy was the Vermentino from the newly created DOCG of Gallura. The delicate floral components mix with green apple and pear. The engaging swirl of flavors is topped off by hints of orange peel and quince. This is as good as it gets and matching with scallops Provencal or a seafood risotto would be ideal.
