David and Ayn Coleman started Adler Fels Winery in 1979 on a crest in the Mayacamas mountain range. From the very start, they hit the ground running with outstanding Chardonnay and Gew?rztraminer. Though they sold the winery 25 years later, the tradition hasn't skipped a beat. The wines are as great as they ever were.

Adler Fels, meaning "eagle rock" in German, refers to the rocky mountains on which the winery stands. The Napa and Sonoma county lines split the Mayacamas mountain range in two. The political lines may be different, but the mountains are the same. Half the wines say Napa, half say Sonoma, but they're always Mayacamas. It's no secret that most of the great vineyards of the world are on mountains.

Winemaker Linda Trotta has worked in some of the most revered wineries in California, including Opus One, so she's no stranger to great wine. Her style, like any great winemaker, is balance, and that's what she's achieved here.

The grapes came from the cool Russian River in Sonoma and the even cooler Monterey County. The 2015 vintage was textbook in that it was relatively cool in the spring, which lowers the yields and produces smaller grapes. Smaller grapes mean less water, and less water means more flavor.

That's the ticket here. The plethora of clean stone fruit and tropical essences balance alongside a touch of vanilla and a lip smacking, lemony finish.
