In our continuing effort to bring you the hidden gems in the wine world, especially those crafted by women, we are more than thrilled to offer this enticing Black Badger Syrah. It's even more exciting when the winemaker also owns the winery, as in this case.

Carolina Bistue came from a dedicated wine family and received her Master's in Viticulture and Enology at U.C. Davis. As soon as she graduated, she promptly left for Spain to learn more about Old World winemaking. Then she moved on to Argentina, where she learned more New World techniques under the tutelage of superstar winemaker Paul Hobbs.

There's an old saying in winemaking: you can't learn too much. Carolina certainly embraces that philosophy. She also believes in minimal intervention, subscribing to the conviction that in winemaking less is more. The "less" is less chemicals and more natural ways of dealing with pests, and less wood means more natural grape flavors.

Carolina's treatment includes giving the grapes longer hang time on the vine to pick up more flavors. A shorter aging period in larger oak barrels expands, rather than obscures, the flavors of the grape, and less additions during production ensure the purity of the wine. The result is a larger-than-life offering with the Syrah's size and magnitude taking center stage, but held in check by small amounts of Grenache and Mourvedre. You couldn't ask for more.
