Voskehat translates to "golden seed" in Armenian. It is so called because it is considered the finest white grape grown the ancient wine region of Ararat. Voskeni is regarded as the finest winery in an area thought to be the birthplace of wine - its history going back some 8,000 years. It is a truly remarkable legacy.

The Caucasus region passes through the boundaries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and parts of Iran, Russia, and Turkey. This region is looked upon as the birthplace of wine because archaeologists discovered the oldest winemaking facility in Armenia, along with grape residue in clay jars in Georgia, and signs of grape growing in Turkey - all dating back to the time between 8000 B.C. and 4100 B.C. No other place on Earth comes close.

It is unfortunate that the later history of genocide and brutality not only made its mark on this country, but also stifled its progress in the wine world. Who knows what would have happened if its past had been gentler? Most likely we'd have been enjoying these wines much sooner.

Voskehat is a thick-skinned grape, making it compatible with the often brutally hot summers that would wither less hardy varietals. But, it's not just about its hardiness. The grape also exhibits lovely floral and tropical fruit notes to match its piquant lime components.

It's all here and then some. The exquisitely nuanced flavors dance on the tongue, the wine perhaps suggesting some of its source's vaulted history and prospects for the future.
