The Ayles Estate is in northeastern Spain, just south of Rioja and west of Barcelona. It has been run by the Reula Family since the 1980s when they re-unified several small estates that had been crafting wines since the 14th Century.

Ayles is located in Aragon, an area with a rich history going back even before its wine story begins. While indigenous grapes, like Tempranillo and Garnacha, are still Spanish staples, the Greeks and then the Romans brought their varietals along with their more advanced grape-growing methods more than 3,000 years ago. As a result, Garnacha and Tempranillo are the most planted grapes, but most of the areas use grapes that have migrated from all over the world. This allows Aragon to pick and choose from a veritable fruit basket of varietals at their disposal that they can blend to their heart's content. With so much to work with, they can bask in their riches.

And so, the story of our selection begins. It is a blend of 35% each of Tempranillo and Merlot and 15% each of Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon. Only Spain would put together a blend like this and the only reason to explain it is because they can. Each grape contributes to the whole without controlling it. Garnacha and Tempranillo provide the spice while Merlot and Cabernet provide the density, wild cherry and blueberry. It all works and works nicely with a cornucopia of dishes, from a spicy lentil soup to shredded pork tacos.<'/p<
