Fonrozay is part of the UDP, The Union of Producers, formed in 1966 by several small Bordeaux chateau in Saint-Emilion, one of the most heralded of Bordeaux appellations. The UDP controls several properties on the Right Bank with a team of luminaries who assure that the quality of each property is up to their high standards.
The idea was hatched some 30 years earlier by Robert Villepique, owner of Chateau Figeac, one of finest chateaux in Saint-Emilion. His mission was to elevate the status of other chateaux, most of whom were not in Saint-Emilion, to prove that the Right Bank was not just two legendary appellations, Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, but many. Its properties like Fonrozay that proved his point. The blend here is classic Right Bank; 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. The grapes are picked and fermented separately in lots, according to where the vines are located in the vineyard. The extended fermentation lasts almost 30 days at low temperatures, to slowly extract the flavors hidden in the pulp. This assures the maximum presence and authority that is the benchmark of Bordeaux.
The classic Right Bank nose is redolent with raspberry and spice. The flavors offer the same but add the telltale presence of the Cabernet Franc with cranberry, touches of mint and cocoa. The finish is a match for anything from a sumptuous feast for the king featuring roast pheasant and elk to a countryside local taste of rabbit stew or a wild mushroom risotto.
