Lestrille was founded in 1901 by the Roumage Family and is now run by one of the descendants, Estelle Roumage. They rest in Entre Deux Mers, "between two seas," which is literally between the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers in the heart of Bordeaux. Their 100 acre estates was certified organic in 2016. There were several things that drove us to this wine. First of all, we have featured them in the past and the response has always been a sellout. The 2016 vintage is one of the best we've ever tasted, but its price doesn't reflect that. The hierarchy in Bordeaux dictates that when a spectacular vintage comes along, like 2015, you ignore succeeding vintages until the next spectacular vintage.
So, when a great vintage, like 2016, comes along it gets compared to 2015 and of course they don't call it as good because that would make those who pontificate about such things look suspicious about the 2015. If it sounds crazy, it is. We tasted a lot of both vintages and in many cases the 2016's were right there with the 2015's, but the prices were almost cut in half! Even in not-so-great vintage, Lestrille exceeds the norm because their reputation and history is what drives them to excel no matter what Mother Nature gives them.
In this case a spectacular wine. Our 100% Merlot beauty has all the earth and black currant flavors we've come to know and love in great Bordeaux. All this excitement lingers in wait for roast duck or sirloin tips in a mushroom ragout.
