We love being introduced to grapes we've never heard of. Cococciola would be the latest. Its tiny production is only in Abruzzo, off of Italy's Adriatic coast.

Terre Valse is the product of Cantina Frentana, a co-operative founded in 1958 to help elevate the status of Abruzzo wine. You see, even into the 1980s, Abruzzo was making barely quaffable wines, many of which were sold in bulk to other areas in the north to "strengthen" their weaker vintages. It worked for everybody except the growers in Abruzzo, who were losing money. Through years of hard work, the cooperative's mission of elevating their local wines has been a magnificent success.

Co-ops like Frentana, along with other enlightened winery and vineyard owners, raised the quality of their wines so that they could make a decent living. In doing so, they've laid the groundwork for future generations of Abruzzo winemakers.

Wines from Abruzzo are still some of the greatest values in Italy, except that value has also been supplemented with excellent quality. Our selection is proof.

Cantina Frentana is the king of Cococciola and, as a result, feels it is their responsibility to make the best wine possible from it. We have no basis of comparison here, since this is our first, but this wine is a whopper! Lovely, enduring flavors of guava and apple are paired with lime and spice. Try it with shrimp, crab or spiced lentils.
