Jim Allen and his wife, Barbara, purchased a 24-acre farm in the Rutherford district of Napa in 1978. They planted Chardonnay and Cabernet on land that had been a vineyard for over 100 years. It came with a barn that had two giant Sequoia trees, one on each side of the barn door. The name of the winery was born.

His success, like so many back then, was meteoric. He was the right guy, in the right place, at the right time. Add to that he was one of the nicest, funniest and most generous guys around. People didn't just like Jim Allen, they loved him.

Since Napa was already known for Cabernet, Jim focused on Chardonnay. Besides his own, he looked at other locations so he could make a range of wines to suit any taste. One of those locations was a vineyard in Sonoma called Cutrer. The Chardonnay Jim crafted from that vineyard was exemplary. It was one of the most sought-after Chardonnays around. It was also the cause of his losing it. The wine was so outstanding, the owner of the vineyard decided to make wine himself and Sonoma-Cutrer was born. Thanks, Jim.

We lost Jim Allen in 2017 and many of us will always miss him. His wine lives on and our selection is a classic tribute to him. This is a punchy, endowed and exciting wine featuring nuanced pear and apple, vanilla, spice and a gripping finish.
