If you measure success by the quality of the product you create, then Kaschina Cellars, creators of our Karo-Kann, was very successful. Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that in the wine business. This is about as good as Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon can get, yet the winery is now out of business.

We're only beginning to see amazing deals like this which is sadly happy. It's sad because there won't be any more Karo- Kann, but we're very happy to bring it to you. To go into all the reasons how and why this happened would not be as interesting as the wine itself. Suffice to say that 10 years ago there were about 300 wineries in the Napa Valley. Today there are 1,000.

Karo-Kann came from a single vineyard simply named Block 12. That's how you delineate a vineyard. You separate it in blocks based on the soil and exposure. They can be of any size. It's all about the grapes that come from it. Most wines are a mixture of blocks, even when they're the same grape. You only bottle solely from one block when you can't improve what you have.

That would certainly be the case here. First off, 2015 was nothing less than a perfect year. Everything began and finished as it should. The result was an incredible offering with densely packed flavors of currant, cranberry and cassis wrapped in a robe of medium to full tannins.

It's so good you could drink it on its own, but a chateaubriand wouldn't hurt.
